Workshop – Package and Advertistment Design

The course focuses on the design used to the promotion and presentation of selected product/object with compliance or redesign of the existing Corporate Identity (visual style) and its developing into applications. Individual works are closely linked and specifically limited to the type of task (content), the possibilities of realization and marketing requirements. Packaging design is seen as an integral part of the promotion of goods.

During the semester are gradually assigned 2 different tasks. The first task contains a design and graphics of folding package, the second task contains design and graphics of multi-functional package, which is concurrently also a product/object or design for presentation purposes for product/services etc. (presentation stand for goods, promotional eye-catcher, exhibition stand with graphics, etc.). A part of the work is realization of a maquette.

Examples of project themes:
- Design of folded package
- The design of ecological package (recycled material, multi-function, etc.)
- Design of package for the luxury product, unusual solutions
- Design of presentation stand in relation to Corporate Identity, innovative solution.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Packaging and promotional design is a specific area of visual communication design, in which students learn about different creative approaches, and the materials and technologies that are important part of packaging design.

Prerequisites

Ability to analyze the problem of drawing submission of ideas, basic knowledge of composition, color, knowledge of software applications designed for 2D graphics and prepress (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw), basics of typography, basics of 3D modeling and visualization.

Creative work in ateliers.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Graded course-unit credit requirements: attendance at lessons, handing over assigned projects by the deadline in a sufficient quality. Presentation of an elaborated project. Design and the level of presentation of each project are evaluated separately.
Work will incl. source files completely delivered in electronic format, incl. Upload data to a virtual gallery of work.
Resulting evaluation consists of evaluations on projects. In total it will be possible to aquire 100 points. Resulting classification will be defined by the ECTS scale.
If some of the projects are awarded less than half of the maximum pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed".
According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. If some of the projects are awarded less than 50 pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed". The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 - 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 - 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 - 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 - 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 - 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 - 0 / 4 / Failed.

Aims

The goal is to gain practical experience in processing a specific type of designing, which is in communication design, subject to the requirements of marketing/advertising.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance in workshop is controlled. Students have to be present in scheduled hours in the workshop, work on assigned projects and wait for consultation, unless a lecturer gives other individual plan. Students are obliged to inform the lecturer in advance about his/her working-place in the scheduled education time (studio, workshops, modelling room or college dormitory, home, producer etc.) - as absence is not excused without this information. The excuse of absence is possible only due serious reasons such as illness. Unexcused absence could be reason for not accepting a project.
