Quality Management

The course Quality management introduces the students to the basic principles of modern company effectiveness management. It provides basic information on European quality policy and complex systems of quality assurance in the context of environment protection and occupational safety and health protection in the EU as a precondition for introduction of products to the market. Systems of technical standards significant for assurance of acceptability of the final product are presented.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Understanding the principles of total quality management, legal norms of quality management (Czech Republic, EU) oriented at competitiveness. Knowledge of the procedures of compulsory conformity assessment. Knowledge of the legislation and standards related to compulsory conformity assessment.

Prerequisites

Students are required to have the basic knowledge of technology, knowledge of mathematics and physics in the scope corresponding to the bachelor level of studies.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Exercises are focused on practical topics presented in lectures.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The course unit credit requirements:
Participation in the seminars. Presentation of one report and undertaking of three tests on topics announced by the lecturer during the semester. Writing of one Case Study of Conformity Assessment (CE). In case the student fails to meet these requirements, the lecturer can set an alternative condition in reasonable cases. If a student gets more than 50 points for activities during a semester, he/she will be suggested a mark and he/she does not have to take an examination. Other students have to take an examination (written and oral). Exam evaluation: excellent (91-100 points), very good (81-90 points), good (71-80 points), satisfactory (61-70 points), sufficient (51-60 points), failed (0-50 points).

Course curriculum

Lectures:
1. Basic terminology. Definition and dimension of quality (complete product). Orientation at customer. Determination of priorities. Process approach. Integrated system of process control and development. Six Sigma, Lean Production.
2. Total quality management. Quality and marketing. Quality planning (QFD, FMEA). Environmental and safety limiting conditions of management system.
3. Conformity assessment. Obligatory and optional conformity assessment. EU and Czech legal milieu.
4. Technical standards. Quality as conformity on the interface of processes. Positives of normalized interface. Systems of technical standards. International Standards ISO 9000. Conformity assessment according to ISO 9001.

Seminars:
1. Students‘ presentations and discussion to subjects of lectures.
2. Conformity assessment – Case Studies.

Aims

Students will be made familiar with the main tools of modern quality management in the context of environment protection and occupational safety and health protection. They will be introduced to basics of the community law of EU.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance at seminars is compulsory. Each student must take part in all scored activities. An alternative assignment may be set in order to approve the course and to award the course-unit credit.
