Laboratory Tests of Building Materials and Components I

FAST-CJ05Acad. year: 2013/2014

The students in the subject laboratory tests during the winter term are methodically and professionally prepared for selected topics of their work. The subject includes introductory information and tutorials about the problems of operating conditions in the laboratories of the Institute, about work safety and temporally possibilities of experimental works with respect to the educational capacity. In further course of time every student works separately: he secures the special literature and Standards, according to the orientation of his work and he acquaints himself with technical parameters of laboratory equipments and with the progress of working procedures on special apparatuses. After finishing this theoretical preparation it is possible to start the experimental work following the individual assignments. The methodical procedures are consulted with respective heads of work and the same goes for the realization of laboratory tutorials and training. The guarantor and the tutelage of the subject secure the coordination of educational and laboratory works including the inspection of laboratory technique and apparatuses suitability.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

In this course students are very closely acquainted with laboratory equipment for testing as physico-mechanical and physico-chemical properties of building materials. The course is focused on the evaluation of specific building materials with which students encounter in their final year of studies. Students will be able for example:

Describe in detail the methods for determining the physico-mechanical and physico-chemical parameters of specific building materials,
Propose a set of tests for realistic evaluation of specific building materials
Interpret the relationship between the results and with the behavior of a particular material,
Based on the analysis results in an objective way to assess the status of building materials,
Implement the following knowledge acquired in the diploma thesis and is subsequently able to convert them into practice.

Prerequisites

Knowledge technologies for the preparation of specimens for each type of building materials (cement composites, ceramics, etc.). Knowledge of methods for testing these materials in accordance with relevant standards and practices.

Co-requisites

Fundamentals of mathematical statistics. Ability to evaluate and interpret the obtained results. Knowledge of basic relations between the physico-chemical properties of the material and its physical and mechanical parameters.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
The content of the lectures is prepared in the digital form of presentations with the largest share of graphic details that will allow to closer understanding the objective issue. The content of exercise lectures is based on the digital presentation of task, which is then clearly undertaken by experiment and then student must compile and evaluate the results in the reports

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Attendance at seminars is compulsory. During the exercise students work protocols, protocols of the working groups, some individually. Quality protocol is evaluated spot. Preparation of the final test with at least 65% success rate. According to the above points gained, students are classified
