Spanish - Elementary Part 1

The course is for real beginners, and is based on units 1 - 5 of the text book Nuevo Ven I.
The students will learn the basics of communication in these situations: greetings, introductions, ask about profession, address, telephone number, nationality, time, ask and tell directions, describe their home, ask about the position of objects in a house, how much the rent is, to order a drink in a bar or a meal in a restaurant.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students will master the basics of Spanish at the level A- of CEFR, so they know Spanish alphabet, the rules of word stress, basic vocabulary and grammar. They will be able to read, translate and create simple texts in Spanish. They will know how to introduce themselves, spell their names, use greetings in various situations, ask for personal details, telephone number, and time, also they will be able to communicate when renting an apartment, or ordering in a bar or restaurant, as well as to ask and tell directions in a town or city. Students will master the basic grammar - personal nouns, plural of nouns, congruence of nouns and adjectives, basic use of articles, possessive pronouns, prepositions of place, to conjugate regular and frequently used irregular verbs (ser, estar, gustar, ir, etc.) in the present tense, form sentence, question and positive imperative.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Vocabulary is practiced and knowledge extended in an interactive way, with the emphasis on conversation. Development and practice of communication and listening skills takes place using interactive audio-visual equipment, LMS Moodle and Smartboards.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

In order to receive a credit for the course, students need to attend classes regularly (max. 3 absences per semester), do homework and actively participate in the lessons.

Course curriculum

All units are from Nuevo Ven 1.

Week 1 - Unit 1 – Pronunciation and spelling, introducing yourself and the vocabulary in the field of jobs.

Week 2 - Unit 1 – Basic grammar, conjugation of basic verbs.

Week 3 - Unit 2 – Introducing your friends and the ability to ask about their origin. Ask for more information about people that is introduced to you.

Week 4 - Unit 2 – Numbers 1-9. Extend the vocabulary related to jobs. The conjugation of irregular verbs.

Week 5 - Unit 3 – Parts of the house. Placing things inside the house.

Week 6 - Unit 3 – Numbers 10 – 20. Articles and their placement together with nouns. Match nouns and adjectives. The conjugation of verbs.

Week 7 - Unit 4 – Orientation in the city and the ability to ask for the way to. Ask about the time.

Week 8 - Unit 4 – Numbers 20 – 1000. Articles and the difference between verbs ser, estar and haber.

Week 9 - Unit 5 – Know how to ask for food in the restaurant. Ask your group if they like the food. Vocabulary related to food.

Week 10 – Unit 5 – The imperative in the regular verbs. The extension of vocabulary of regular and irregular verbs in the present tenses.

Week 11 – Practicing with the studied grammar and vocabulary.

Week 12– Conversations about the studied subjects.

Week 13 – End of course test (unless tutor changes instruction).

The aim of this course is to teach the Spanish language and the basic communicative skills that are necessary to achieve the A1 inferior level.

1. Introduction to the system of Spanish, Unidad 1 - pronunciation and orthography, introducing, professions.
2. Unidad 1 - basic grammar, conjugation of regular verbs.
3. Unidad 2 - Introducing friends, ask about nationality.
4. Unidad 2 - Numbers 1-9, vocabulary - professions, gender of nouns, conjugation of more verbs.
5. Unidad 3 - Visit to a flat, naming of particular rooms and common objects in a flat.
6. Unidad 3 - Numbers 10-20, definite articles, their position in sentences, congruence of nouns and adjectives.
7. Unidad 4 - Going around a town, ask directions, telling and asking the time.
8. Unidad 4 - Numbers 20-1000, indefinite articles, differences between the verbs ser, estar and haber.
9. Unidad 5 - At a restaurant - ordering a meal, ask for the bill, names of typical Spanish meals and food.
10. Uniddad 5 - Positive imperative of regular verbs, conjugation of other irregular verbs.
