An English course for intermediate students which prepares students for the compulsory course Professional English 2 (Odborná angličtina 2). Emphasis is put on practical language skills needed at work in the area of management and information technology.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will acquire the basic terminology and language skills necessary for communication in various situations in business and management, especially regarding company organization , production process, trading, presentations and financial matters. They will be made familiar with terminology necessary for work in IT and with professional IT materials.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of English at CEF A2 level.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Exercises promote the practical mastery of the subject presented in lectures or assigned for individual study with the active participation of students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

1. Students have to pass a credit test from the taught topics. Maximum number of points for the test is 40, minimum 20.
2. The exam consists of two parts - writing and listening. Students may achieve 30 points for each part maximum. Final assessment reflects also the points achieved in the tests. Maximum number of points is 100.

Course curriculum

1.Tense review. Vocab: personal information, learning vocabulary.
2. Present Simple and Continuous, action and state verbs. Functions: introductions and greetings, welcoming a visitor.
3. Past Simple and Present Perfect Simple review, used to + infinitive, subject and object questions. Vocab: work file, dictionary skills.
4. Company and job profile. Functions: answering the phone, making and changing appointments. Saying dates. Technical text.
5. Comparative and superlative adjectives, relative clauses. Vocab: adjectives, personal attitudes and qualities.
6. Functions: giving opinions, agreeing and disagreeing, participating in a meeting or discussion.
7. Present and past trends: Present Continuous and Past Simple, adjectives and adverbs. Vocab: food file, word groups.
8. Reading: ethical consumerism. Functions: advice and suggestions. Technical text.
9. Passives: Present Simple, Present Continuous, Past Simple, Present Perfect Simple, Will Future. Vocab: leisure and fitness activities, word combinations
10. Functions: leaving recorded messages, using mobile phones.
11. Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect. Vocab: gerunds file, personal management. Technical text.
12. Functions: requests and offers, exchanging information.
13. Credit test.

Aims

Preparation for the compulsory course Professional English 2 (Odborná angličtina 2), development of all language skills, consolidation and deepening of knowledge of grammatical structures, and increase in vocabulary with special emphasis on language needed at work.

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.
