The course focuses on the following topics: user competence in Windows 7 operating system (philosophy of multitask information system, user interface, basic setting-up, work with objects, etc.), MS DOS operating system (basic internal commands), application software for personal computers (within Windows XP, work with MS Word text editor, MS Excel chart processor, tools for creating presentations in MS PowerPoint, routine use of MS Internet Explorer, MS Outlook, fundamentals of MS Access databases). It provides students with knowledge of PC hardware, new technologies in this area, as well as peripheral equipment and its use.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with new trends in IT development in the area of PC architecture. They will acquire skills necessary for using MS Windows 7 operating system and MS Office 2003 application instrument. These skills and experience may be used by them as an tool for elaborating projects and tasks in other courses.

1. Basic competence in PC (theoretical and practical)
2. Basic competence in MS Windows 7 operating system.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course contains lectures that explain basic principles, problems and methodology of the discipline, and exercises that promote the practical knowledge of the subject presented in the lectures.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Conditions for awarding the course-unit credit:
1. Delivery of semester work regarding “New Trends in IT Development” connected with the visit to the international fair.
2. Active participation in seminars will be assessed by teacher.

Form of examination: Combined, composed of three parts:
1. Test covering the topics corresponding to the acquired theoretical knowledge
2. Written part – case study from the field of fundamentals of databases (MS Access – relations)
3. Practical oral part – solution of a task on PC regarding the practical knowledge of acquired topics.

- MS Excel - basic terminology, formatting, sorting, filtering,

- MS Excel - the PivotTable report charts
- MS Word - basic concepts, text formatting, table of contents, tables,
- MS Word - mail merge
- Useful programs, antivirus, configuration software

Aims

The main objective of the course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for solution of tasks in the field of computer technology with respect to hardware (PC architecture and configuration), as well as software: operating systems (MS Windows, MS DOS), application software (MS Office).

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Control of results of independent work on specified tasks. In case of absence from seminars, teacher can set elaboration of additional task.
