The course focuses on characteristic features of business professional communication. It provides students with the relevant specialist language and professional communication skills they will need in the workplace. The course provides preparation for Business English examinations at B2 level.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course at upper-intermediate level (B2 according to CEFR) is designed to prepare students for various economic professions. It will enrich their professional vocabulary and will enable them to express themselves more authoritatively in professional contexts.

Prerequisites

Professional English 2 is a follow-up to the course studies in the previous semester (Professional English 1) covering 4 units in the course book (U1, U2, U3, U4). Course-unit credit from course 1 is a necessary pre-requisite to continue in the course 2.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit is awarded on condition of regular attendance, active participation and having worked out all assigned tasks. The examination consists of a written part (test with 50% score as minimum) and an oral part (2 classified presentations). The exam corresponds to the B2 level according to the Common European Framework. The credit test and exam have one regular term and two resits.

8. U7: Cause and effect, ability, articles.
9. U7: Communicating in meetings. Car Glazer.
10.U8: Fair trade or free trade. Contracts and corporate ethics.
11.U8: Obligation and permission, inversion.
12.U8: Negotiating a compromise. Green Hills Coffee.
13. Awarding credit.

Aims

The course has a practical approach and is intended for pre-service students preparing for work in a business environment.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Students’ participation is compulsory and their work is systematically controlled. Absence may be compensated for by the agreement with the teacher.
