Production and Waste

Industrial manufacturing – history, development and its specification, environmental impact. Waste production in relation to rise of industrial manufacturing and living standards. Existing imbalance between production and consumption. Methods and procedures of utilization/treatment of waste in production, energy industry and relevant areas.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Pressing issue of ever rising waste production ass well as types of waste, especially in industry, is presented in this course. Individual industrial areas will be analyzed with respect to the waste they produce and their relation to environment protection.

Prerequisites

Students should have basic knowledge from first three semesters at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Award of conditioned by presentation of a paper on a given topic and by active participation in all lessons and field trips. In justified cases, teacher may present an alternative credit condition. Exam is written.

3. Waste from chemical and metallurgical industries
4. Plastics and rubber industries
5. Waste from agricultural and food processing industries
6. Waste from energy industry
7. Waste from glass producing and construction industries
8. Waste from mining and transport industries
9. Production and disposal of waste coming from utilization of oil products
10. Environmental aspects of industrial waste
11. Disposal of hazardous waste
12. Basic methods of hazardous waste disposal
13. New technologies in waste management

Aims

This course aims to elevate awareness of necessity and need to wisely treat wastes – their production and minimization incorporated in design, and maximum utilization of their utilization if produced.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Only seminars are compulsory and attendace sheets are kept. In justified cases, attendance may be substituted by an individual project.

2. Energy production and distribution, necessary part of industry production and human society development.
3. Basic principles of environment protection.
4. Concrete impacts of industry proceeding to environment.
5. Basic principles of sustainable development and consumption.
6. Waste proceeding, basic terms.
7. Systems of waste processing, equipment to its utilization and disposal.
8. Product life cycle, principle practical application within its design.
9. Industry waste output.
10. Waste kinds and volume of raw material mining.
11. Methods of waste utilization.
12. Environmental legislative bases, legislative tools of environment protection (EA, EIA, ISO etc.).
13. Environmental business management system (EMS, IPPC).
