Workshop - Design II

FSI-YZ2Acad. year: 2011/2012

The subject follows up on the "Workshop - Design I" course, it extends the fundamentals of industrial design by building of matter in space. Practical exercises focused on three-dimensional creation are an introduction to concrete assignments. Compositional studies accent the building content and relationships inside and outside spatial forms (content and form, part and whole, proportions, material).

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course enables students to acquire basic knowledge needed for creating and analysing spatial objects. The secondary product of inventive spatial work is that students are familiarized with basic techniques, materials, tools and habits for model constructions.

Prerequisites

The elementary knowledge of perspective and experiences with the drawing of still-life composed of basic geometric objects in a perspective view is assumed as well as basic experience with three-dimensional composition design onto conventional themes with mass model and interrelated ability of familiar materials using (paper, clay, plaster, HPS) and technology for their formation. The basic orientation in history of art and design is important either and experience with the 3D creation is welcome.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Graded course-unit credit requirements: attendance in lessons, meeting assigned projects deadlines, oral presentation of projects.
Resulting evaluation consists of evaluations on projects. In total it will be possible to aquire 100 points. Resulting classification will be defined by the ECTS scale.
If some of the projects are awarded less than half of the maximum pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed".
According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. . If some of the projects are awarded less than 50 pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed". The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 - 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 - 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 - 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 - 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 - 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 - 0 / 4 / Failed.

Aims

The course objective is to familiarize students with the fundamentals of industrial design in the creative and spatial form, which is applied to mass and compositional studies so that students` skills can be developed.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance in workshop is controlled. Students have to be present in scheduled hours in the workshop, work on assigned projects and wait for consultation, unless a lecturer gives other individual plan. Students are obliged to inform the lecturer in advance about his/her working-place in the scheduled education time (studio, workshops, modelling room or college dormitory, home, producer etc.) - as absence is not excused without this information. The excuse of absence is possible only due serious reasons such as illness. Unexcused absence may jeopardise accepting a project.
