Video and Multimedia Technology

TV colorimetry. Picture flux, picture function, video signal (analysis in space-time and frequency domain) .TV standards, structure of composite video-signal. Video signal distortions. CCD and CMOS image sensors, TV colour cameras, thermovision cameras. Colour picture tubes, monolithic flat displays,colour projection systems. Magnetic and optical recording of video-signals (CD, DVD, Blu Ray etc.). Digitizing of video signals. Compression of digital video data (standards JPEG, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, Dirac, VC-1). Digital audio signal processing and compression. Analog and digital interfaces. 3DTV. Video quality assessment.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students shall learn methods and technical devices used for scanning, monitoring, recording, processing and measurement of analog and above all digital video and audio signals.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the Bachelor´s degree level is requested.

Course curriculum

1. Basics of TV colorimetry.
2. Principles ot television transmission. The basic concepts of video technology. Image scanning, structure of the CVBS signal, distortions.
3. Analog television standards PAL and NTSC. Analog interfaces used in video technology.
4. Devices for scanning of video signals.
5. Displays. CRT tubes, LCD, OLED and plasma panels, projection systems.
6. Digitizing video signals. Digital interfaces.
7. Digital video compression. Standards JPEG, MPEG1, MPEG2.
8. Modern compression standards, part 1. MPEG4 Part 2, MPEG4 Part 10.
9. Modern compression standards, part 2. Dirac, SMPTE VC-1, H.265.
10. Digital audio processing and compression.
11. Video recording - Magnetic tapes, optical discs CD, DVD, BD, players and recorders.
12. Objective and subjective video quality assessment.
13. Trends and perspectives in video technology. 3DTV.

Gaining knowledge of methods and technical devices for scanning, monitoring, recording, processing and measurement of analogue and above all digital video and audio signals.

1.Basic concepts of videotechnology-picture flux,picture function, video-signal (description in the time-spatial and spectral areas).
2.Basic concepts of the analogue TV transmission image scanning, composite video (colour) signal, spatial resolution of TV system.
3.Distortions of the video-signals and their corrections
4.TV colorimetry.
5.Scanning of video signals a)- camera tubes.
6.Scanning of video-signals(b)- monolithic image sensors CCD, TV colour cameras.
7.Colour picture tubes,displays and projection systems.
8.Recording of video-signals a)- principles and standards of the analogue magnetic recording.
9.Recording of video-signals(b)types,principles and standards of the digital recording.
10.Composite analogue colour TV standards NTSC,PAL,SECAM.
11.Enhanced analogue colour TV standards - (PALplus, MAC).
12.A/D conversion of the video-signals (standard ITU R 601).
13.Compression of the digital video-data, standards JPEG,MPEG.

1.Specification of the special measurig devices in the laboratory of video-technology. Comment of laboratory exercises 1-6 (2 hours).
2.Measurement of the operational video-amplifier
AD 810 (2 hours).
3.Measurement of TV camera (2 hours).
4.Measurement of the composite colour video- signals parameters, checking of TV generator (2 hours).
5.Demonstration "TV cameras and record of video-signals" (2 hours).
6.Measurement and adjustement of the TV colour tube (2 hours).
7.Measurement of the composite colour video- signals by the vektorscop (2 hours).
8.D/A conversion and compression of video-signals - demonstration exercise (2 hours).
9.Credit (2 hours).
