Laboratory Classes in Laboratory Technics I

Laboratory code and safety measures, basic laboratory work - weighing, work with glass, measuring volumes of liquids, filtration, heating, annealing, cooling, dehydrating, distillation, crystallization, decantation, sublimation, extraction, determination of physical variables - refracting index, melting point, density, pH. Simple tasks - fraction crystallization, pure sodium chloride purification, preparation of the solutions with accurate concentrations, distillation of salt acid, gas preparation.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Obtaining skills and a practical knowledge of basic operations that are used in the chemical laboratory.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of secondary school chemistry and basic mathematics.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

The laboratory notebook (control of preparation), report sheets, tests, course-unit credit test.

Course curriculum

1. Introduction
2. Laboratory safety and guidelines, laboratory notes. Laboratory equipment.
3. Weighing, work with glass. Measuring volumes of liquids, volumetric glass. Preparation of solutions with accurate concentrations. Heating.

4. Filtration - gravity and vacuum filtration. Saturated solution, solubility curve, cooling.
(Test - laboratory equipment.)
5. Filtration (Büchner funnel), decanting, dehydrating. Evaporation, crystallization - types.
6. Extraction, sublimation. Determination of melting point. Annealing.
7. Distillation - coolers, determination of density and index of refraction.
8. Titration - byrettes, pH measuring.
9. Gas preparation in the laboratory.
10.-12. Fraction crystallization of mixture chromium(III) oxide,borax and sodium chloride.
Distillation of hydrochloric acid.
Solubility product of lead(II) iodide.
13. Course-unit credit test. Course-unit credit.

Aims

The target of the course is a fast and necessary unification of levels of practical and laboratory knowledge of the starting students - chemists.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Participation on each laboratory practice is necessary. In the case of illness confirmed with a doctor is substitution in other students group possible.
