Learning outcomes of the course unit

Completing the course of Organic Chemistry I students acquire basic knowledge of reactivity and stereochemistry of individual hydrocarbons from alkanes to aromatic compounds. In the second
part of course the chemistry of halogen and hydroxy derivatives is discussed. The knowledge acquired enables to complete the laboratory practice of organic chemistry.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the course General Chemistry. Knowledge of high-school Organic chemistry based on the text-book Chemie II. V kostce.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Completing the tutorial of Organic chemistry requires successfully passed class exam over 50 points. The examination consists from oral examination only.

Course curriculum

1. Basic principles. 2. Thermodynamic and kinetic control of organic reactions. 3. Alkanes and cycloalkanes. 4. Stereochemistry. 5. Organic structural analysis. 6. Alkenes. 7. Alkadienes. 8. Alkynes. 9. Aromatic hydrocarbons. 10. Halogen derivatives. 11. Hydroxy compounds.

Work placements

Aims

Orientation in the basic knowledge for the understanding of the reactivity of organic compounds. The IUPAC nomenclature and basics of stereochemistry of organic compounds are the necessary prerequisites of the course. The course continues with the chemistry of individual groups of hydrocarbons (alkanes and cycloalcanes, alkenes, alkadienes, alkynes and aromatic hydrocarbons).
The course is closed by the chemistry of their halogen and hydroxy derivates.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Completing the tutorial of Organic chemistry requires the attendance and three successfully passed class exams. The examination consists from oral examination only.
