Laboratory Classes in Analytical Chemistry I

Practical training at analytical reaction of selected ions: Cations of alkali metals and alkali earth metals, group of cations precipitating by HCl, by sulphane under acidic conditions, by amonium hydrogensufide, group of anions forming precipitates with baryum (II), and with silver (I).
Practical training of basic quantitative analytical methods: gravimetry, volumetry.

Overview of analytically and technologically significant reactions of common ions.
Extension of knowledge on reactivity and some physical properties of groups of elements/ions.
Precise work in analytical laboratory.

- all laboratory tasks completed, results and reports in good quality

Final classification is based on average classification of individual tasks.

Course curriculum

1. Introduction, work safety, analytical laboratory techniques
2. Cations of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals
3. Groups of cations precipitated by HCl and H2S under acidic conditions.
4. Group of cations precipitated by NH4HS.
5. Group of anions producing Ba2+ precipitates.
6. Group of anions producing Ag+ precipitates, soluble in 2 mol/L HNO3
7. Group of anions producing Ag+ salts, insoluble in 2 mol/L HNO3, and anions of NO3-, NO2-, ClO4-
8. Gravimetry I - determination of Fe.
9. Gravimetry II - determination of Ni.
10. Acid-base titrations I.
11. Acid-base titrations II.
12. Complexometric titrations.
13. Redox titrations.

Aims

Encompassment of proof reactions of selected ions and basic methods of quantitative analysis

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Written entrance tests at the beginning of all exercises checking the students readiness for practical work.
Credit test at the course end.
