English for Chemists III

Familiarity with the basic demands how to make a successful oral prezentation and mastering short prezentation based on an individual choice. Practice of organic nomenclature, farther develepment of the verbalization of data and charts as they appear in specific articles. Chemistry of the environment, physical chemistry, chemical engineering. Development of the ability to understand knew expressions through the understanding prefixes and suffixes.

Knowledge of geneal English of A2 level. Completing English for Chemists 1 and 2

Based on the Faculty of Chemistry and BUT regulations.Applications of CALL and CBT methods, colaborative learning.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Written tests within the semester, a credit test at the end of the semester.

Course curriculum

1.Making an oral presentation. Scheduling the presentation, useful expressions and phrases corresponding with the individual sections of the presentation. Proper use of body language in the course of the presentation. Description of more complex charts and pictures. Grammar: future continuous tense, polite way of making an offer. Corresponding exercises.
2. Organic nomenclature. Correct pronunciation of the names of complicated organic compounds. Listening for getting specific information. Development of oral skills through the active role playing in the organic chemistry based educational drama (Story of hydrocarbons, Becoming and Alcohol).
3.Environmental chemistry: Familiarity with the terms applying to the individual environmental compartments encluding their pollution, waste and waste treatmant, sustainable development, etc. Development of the all 4 skills so that students were able to define individual terms (namely different sciences) and to describe the differences between these terms.
Written and oral description of charts and pictures. Conversation focused on the environmenal protection. Grammar: Adverbial clauses of cause and reason.
4. Atomic structure. Specific vocabulary building. Description of the individual parts of an atom. Reading shorter texts on the given topic. Development of the written and oral skills enhancing the ability to ask and answer questions. Oral description of various phenomena through builiding more complex structures based on the creation of the simpler ones. Development of listening with the accent to understand the overall information and the reproduction of the communicated information. Grammar: irregular verbs, passive voice.

5. Chemical engineering. Chemical Engineering in everyday life. Definition of the speicialisation and the description of its history based on the knowledge of the specific vacabulary. Development of the ability to ask and answer questions based on the precise knowledge of the specific terms and their pronunciation. Development of learning autonomy through the creation of own article basedvocabulary and phrases .

6. Word formation, sentence structure. Development of autonomic learning skills through the basic knowlege of morphology. Morpheme analysis and affixation. Parts of speech.

7. heat Transfer. Familiarity with the basic specific terms leading to the both written and oral descriptions of individual phenomina. Development of speaking skills based on defining selected terms and describing differences between them. Writing skills development through the creation of tables. Verbalisation of table data.
Confrontation iwth the authentic video clip focussed on the ability to pick up the selected information.

8. Physical chemistry II - rate of chemical reactions, orders of reactions: development of specific vocabulary , description of other terms refering to the given topic. Development of reading for both gist and specific information. Development of oral and writtne skills through asking and answering questions. Watching authentic video clip leading to the independent description of the chemical reaction involved.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Students hand in individually completed tasks and exercises according to the subject syllabus. They also deliver a presentation on a subject focused topic. Attendance at organized seminars is systematically monitored . Absences at seminars can be compensated by successful delivery of another presentation.
