Analytical Chemistry I

The structure of contemporaneous analytical chemistry. Principles of analytical metrology. Analytical aspects of chemical equilibrium (thermodynamics and kinetics). Explanation of protolytic, complexation, redox, catalytic and inductive reactions. Principles of inorganic qualitative analysis, analytical selectivity and limits. Analytical signal and its qualitative and quantitative evaluation. Problems of sampling. Chemical and physical analytical methods. Gravimetric analysis and its present significance. Principles of solution volumetry. Theory of titration curves and titration characteristics and titration errors. Estimation and evaluation of titration equivalent points. The principles of buffering- acidobasic, redox, ligand and cation buffers. Examples of acidobasic, redox, precipitation and complexometric titrations.Lliquid-liquid extraction, analytical use of ion exchangers.

Relationship between chemical reactivity and analytical behavior of elements and compounds.
Principle of reactivity of ions and methods of standardization of analytical procedures.
Numerical solution of simple analytical problems.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit in calculation lessons - test with successful results.
Requirement for the examination - course-unit credit in calculation lessons, in laboratory lessons and passing General, Inorganic and Physical chemistry examinations.
The examination consists of both written and oral parts.
Classification according to knowledge of theory and practical aspects of analytical chemistry.

Aims

The aim of the course is to survey the following items: analytical application of chemical reactivity, principles of chemical qualitative analysis and methods of chemical quantitative analysis. It also shows the position of analytical chemistry in the system of chemical sciences.
