Original Abstract

Nowadays, the necessary part of the flood protection management is careful investigation of hydraulical conditions at the potentially flooded areas. At wide floodplains in the Czech Republic, quaternary sediments have been usually embedded. Therefore the first flooding is caused by the seepage through the sub-base and levees from the surface streams due to increased water level. The second step is inundation of floodplain at the places with the lowest flood protection. The inundation management by decreased levee crest or special structures (weirs, culverts), the use of polders, branch canals and other facilities need extensive hydraulic computations. For the comfortable and flexible flood management, the results have to be presented within Geographical Information Systems (GIS), which is the part of hazard and evacuation plans and other flood protection documents. The paper shows also the practical application of techniques mentioned at the proposal of the flood protection of the town of Hodonin.
