Original Abstract

The paper discusses the possibility of using high strength concrete in case of steel tubular columns filled with concrete subjected to compression. The data introduced in this paper were obtained within the research programme focused on behaviour of steel tubular columns filled with concrete. The research has been carried out in order to investigate the effect of the concrete strength and the yield stress of the steel tube on the buckling resistance. Experimental analysis was performed within the research. Circular steel tubes without concrete, filled by normal concrete and filled by high-strength concrete have been taken into account within the solution. The aim of this paper is to investigate effectiveness of use of high-strength concrete from two points of view. At first, attention is paid to buckling resistance of the tubes filled with concrete. Results of experimental analysis are evaluated in order to find out what an influence of high-strength concrete on the buckling resistance is. Next aspect, there is a stiffness of composite columns made from steel tube filled with concrete. Evaluating of stiffness was carried out by means of Southwell lines, which is useful instrument for obtaining information about behaviour of compressed columns.
