Original Abstract

In the case of large diameter HDPE and/or PP pipes the most usual joint is the butt weld. This paper focuses on fracture mechanics modeling of a weld bead. To this aim a stress concentrator created by connection between the weld bead and the pipes free surface is considered as a notch. In the first part of the contribution the connection of a weld bead and the pipes free surface is studied from the point of linear elastic fracture mechanics and the influence of high stress concentration in this region on crack initiation and propagation is discussed. In the second part the behavior of the weld bead under creep loading is studied. It is demonstrated that in the case of creep loading conditions the existence of stress concentrators caused by the weld bead has no negative influence on the life time of welded pipes.
