Original Abstract

Application of new production methods such as High Speed Cutting (HSC), Laser Beam Welding or Friction Stir Welding in the aerospace industry leads to the reduction of manufacturing costs. Structures designed for these production techniques are typical by an integral character. A comparison of their behavior with differentially stiffened designs shows the lack of damage tolerance characteristics and that is why this topic is investigated. The paper presents methodology of crack growth analysis used at Institute of Aerospace Engineering (IAE) for assessment of integrally stiffened panels manufactured using HSC. The approach is based on stress intensities calculated from FE method results and crack propagation analysis performed in NASGRO. In the case of two-stringer integral HSC panel, a good correspondence with experimentally determined crack propagation curves was obtained.
