Mezi nejrozšířenější způsob výstavby rodinných domů patřila v minulosti řadová zástavba. Jednalo o poměrně efektivní způsob individuálního stavění, s maximálním využitím plochy pozemku; pro zvýšení úspor se často používaly společné štítové stěny. Velká část těchto domů pomalu dosluhuje, je nutné zajišťovat celkové rekonstrukce, často se musí přistoupit i k demolici. K velice obtížným jednáním obvykle dochází tehdy, jestliže uprostřed řady domů se jeden z majitelů rozhodne odstranit již dožitou stavbu a nahradit ji stavbou novou. Tak se původní mnohaletá výhoda společných stěn může rychle změnit v opak a působit značné obtíže. Článek se proto snaží upozornit na některé problémy související se společnými štítovými stěnami; řečeno ještě obecněji, se stavebními změnami na hranicích pozemků.

One of the mostwidespread methods of construction of family homes in the past was row-housing construction. This was relatively efficient method of building individual homes while making maximum use of the land area; for even greater economy of space joint gable walls were often used. Many of these homes are now wearing out and require overall reconstruction, and some even have to be demolished. Very complicated negotiations arise in cases where one owner of a row house decides to remove the old structure and replace it with a new one. At that point the advantages enjoyed for many years of sharing walls are quickly transformed into the reverse and become the source of considerable difficulties. This article attempts to draw attention to some problems related to having joint gable walls, and more generally to making structural changes on the edge of ones property.
