Original Abstract

Plasma polymer films prepared from organosilicon monomers are fascinating materials due to the possibility to vary the degree of organic/inorganic character and the degree of cross-linking of the material. Plasma polymers (prepared from silicon-based monomers 1,2 ) are intended to be applied as an interlayer improving adhesion bonding between the fibrous reinforcement and the polymer matrix in fiber reinforced composites. Experimental and theoretical studies give evidence that properties of composite material are controlled by physical and chemical properties of the interlayer. Long fiber bundles are used for composite fabrication and therefore, surface processing of the continuously moving fiber bundle is required. For that reason, we have developed the new helical coupled plasma system permitting continuous surface treatment and modification of fibers (Figure 1). The system is unique in the Czech republic and only several similar systems are in the world.
