Original Abstract

During the extreme flood in the year 2002,the peak flood discharges for the upper Vlatava River exceeded the 500-year return period. A very curious situation occurred on the Luznice River, where a left bank levee protecting Cep sand pit was overtopped. The sand pit was Filled by flowing from the sand pit at pit its lowest point.Part of the village of Majdalena was seriously damaged and some houses were completely washed away.In this paper the August 2002 flood event is described,the conditions present during the overtopping are analysed,and some conceptual measures for future operation of the sand pit are outlined.
