Original Abstract

Hydrodynamic plain bearings are mostly used for crankshaft support in cylinder block of 4-stroke SI engines. The same is true for con-rod support on crankpin. Usage of plain bearings in combustion engines is allowed by force feed lubrication. Design of plain bearing enables formation of hydrodynamic lubrication film, which ensures low abrasion and high durability. This important mechanical point is also featured by restriction of ability of vibration transfer from crankshaft to engine block, which directly decreases noise radiated from engine. Main objective of lubrication is to detach two relatively moving parts by oil film, which thickness is higher than sum of surface roughness of both parts. Greatness of fluid friction is not in contradistinction to solid friction dependent on material quality of moving parts, but on oil properties such as its dynamic viscosity, velocity of motion, size of friction areas and minimal rest gap.
