Original Abstract

The asymptotic in-plane problem of a bi-material sharp notch with various geometrical pattern and an interface crack in a generally monoclinic piezoelectric bimaterial is analysed using the expanded Lekhnitskii-Eshelby-Stroh formalism, [1]. Assuming small-scale domain switching, the size and shape of the domain switching zone is calculated adopting the energetic switching criterion and micromechanical domain switching model suggested by Hwang et al., [2] for a specified material combination, geometry and polarization orientation. Next, the boundary value problem with the prescribed spontaneous strain and polarization within the switching domain is solved and their influence on the in-plane intensity of singularity at a vertex of the interface in piezoelectric bi-material-bonded joint or at the tip of interface crack is computed. The effects of geometrical and loading parameters on the resulting variation of the intensity of singularity are discussed.
