Original Abstract

The ability of inhaled fibres to penetrate deep into human lungs is well known due to the infamous health effects of asbestos. That ability, however, can be very useful in the case the fibres are made of biodegradable material and serve as carriers for therapeutic agents. Such an idea is not new, its applicability was demonstrated already by Chan and Gonda (1989). Recent research brought magnetically guided fibres that can serve for targeted delivery of inhaled medicine (Nikolaou et al. 2021). The main problem remains with the precise prediction of the flow and deposition site of fibres and hence the precise dose. Our research focuses on improving the precision of computational models for the prediction of the transport of fibres in human airways. Experimental data on the orientation of fibres in the replica of the human first bifurcation was presented by (Lizal et al. 2022). New data are being acquired for realistic inhalation breathing profiles.
