Original Abstract

Silicate densifiers are commonly used in the building industry for surface treatment of concrete due to their ability to seal the surface porosity by forming a silicate gel structure. This study investigates structural changes in lithium silicate concrete densifiers during the gelation process. Lithium silicate concrete densifiers with silicate modules 3.0–4.0 were prepared and characterized at various stages of gelation. Gelation process in the presence of Ca2+ cations was studied using Infrared spectroscopy and Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The importance of the degree of crosslinking of the formed silicate gels was also supported by testing water absorption of surface treated cementitious samples.
