Original Abstract

Inhaled fibres can potentially induce a whole range of adverse reactions, including cancer, mesothelioma, or fibrosis. On the other hand, there were proposals to use the positive features of inhaled aerosols and develop fibrous particles for inhalation therapy (Chan and Gonda, 1989). Regardless of the motivation, whether the goal is to estimate the regional dose of inhaled asbestos fibres or to establish the procedure for treatment with medicinal fibres, it is important to be able to precisely predict their fate after inhalation. The calculation of the flow of fibres is significantly more complex in comparison with spherical particles. It is necessary to deal with the coupled translational and rotational motion and correctly evaluate the relevant forces.
