Interband and quantum cascade lasers are ideal sources to realize compact mid-infrared sensing instruments. Here, we present recent findings on the generation of optical frequency combs. Combined with their inherent detection capabilities, this technology paves the way towards monolithically integrated dual-comb spectrometers
