Original Abstract

Experimental concrete panels of 2300 × 1300 × 150 mm in size were (after an appropriate ageing time) loaded by high temperatures. These panels were heated according to the standard temperature-time curve (ISO 834) stated in EN 1991-1-2 up to the maximum nominal temperature 550, 600, 800 and 1000 °C in a furnace intended for fire tests of building materials. One of the panels was a reference specimen which did not undergo temperature loading. Test specimens were obtained from the panels after the performance of the fire tests. These specimens were provided with a central notch and subsequently tested in three-point bending fracture tests. Parts of the tested specimens were then cut, polished and scanned, and the obtained images were used for the optical detection of mechanical changes in the concrete that occurred due to its exposure to high temperatures. A special filtration procedure was introduced which enabled the quantification of the average brightness change of a black pattern cross-section area, which can be interpreted as an effect of exposure to high temperatures.
