Original Abstract

There is historical evidence that a larger number of companies go public and the proportion of external financing is substantially higher in expansionary phases of the business cycle. Relations between the number of public issues and business cycle variables have been investigated within the lecture. It has been shown that firms operating in both developed and emerging markets in recent times have tended to increase equity more frequently in expansionary periods.
