Original Abstract

The growth of porous anodic films on aluminium in citric acid electrolytes is of considerable interest due to the high formation voltages, exceeding 300 V, resulting in oxide cells approaching the micrometre range. In this work, we have tried to find out the relationship between the crystalline structure, the anodizing behaviour and the features of nucleation and growth of porous anodic films in 0.05M citric acid on thermally pre-treated aluminium foils under various galvanostatic conditions. The findings revealed that, contrarily to the classical anodizing model, the decrease in measured current density results in increasing the formation voltage, pore and cell sizes and in reducing substantially the pore population density mainly because of the self-organized shrinking of sample surface available for pore nucleation and growth, the phenomenon being additionally greatly impacted by the annealing pre-treatment.
