Original Abstract

Two years ago the ownership of numerous small dams changed in the Czech Republic as a part of the transformation of the former Agricultural Water Management Administration. The new owners were designated River Board Agencies which started to verify the technical status of the small dams now in their possession. The audits showed that most of the small dams do not meet present hydraulic and structural safety requirements. The safety of numerous small dams has deteriorated due to ageing and poor maintenance. Many of them also suffer from faults caused by poor design and poor construction. This paper summarizes the experience of its authors with the safety assessment of small embankment dams. Typical hydraulic and stability problems are discussed together with follow-up proposals for remedial works at small schemes.
