Original Abstract

Safety monitoring of significant water structures (namely dams) is performed during periodic dam surveillance. In the Czech Republic, these activities are carried out in accordance with legal documents, in this case with Decree No. 471/2001 Coll. Such technical surveillance includes the monitoring of relevant quantities for the purpose of comparing the gained data with their limit values. This paper describes the determination of the extent of measured quantities using a limit state condition for each type of potential failure. Firstly, scenarios were defined that involved failures leading to global and local loss of stability. For each type of failure the limit state condition was defined, and corresponding monitored quantities were determined based on these limit state conditions. This method was applied in the assessment of the present extent of surveillance at the Kruzberk concrete gravity dam. Existing surveillance was compared with the range of quantities determined from limit state conditions. Finally, the modification and improvement of technical surveillance was proposed.
