Original Abstract

There are many reports of excessive and unanticipated vibrations of cables in cable suspended bridges, electric power lines, vertical suspenders of footbridges, cable-stayed roofs and other structures under the conditions of wind and simultaneous rain. Aerodynamic properties of the cable in its protecting tubular shielding are changing due to the development of one or two water rivulets on the surface of the member. Basic characteristics of rain-wind induced vibrations (RWIV), alternatives of the problem analysis and engineering concepts are described in the paper. There is also included possible use of CFD for the analysis of RWIV phenomenon.
