Presented numerical study is focused on the minimal relative notch depth necessary for the proper realization (and evaluation) of the wedge splitting test of cylinder-shaped quasi-brittle specimens made of various cement based composites differing in their characteristic lengths. The dependence between the minimal starting notch length and the characteristic length of the composite is analysed
