Original Abstract

With dams, levees and floodwalls founded on permeable sandy or sandy-gravel subsoil, seepage under the foundation can give rise to external suffosion or fluidisation of the fine particles behind the structure. Extensive research has been carried out by several authors, namely by Istomina in the nineteen fifties. As the results of previous research differ significantly and some aspects of the phenomenon are still not very clear, additional research on this topic has been performed at the Laboratory of Water Structures (LWS) at the Faculty of Civil Engineering (FCE), Brno University of Technology (BUT). In the paper, clarification and explanation of older research results by Istomina are given together with a summary of research at the LWS, which comprised about 320 tests carried out on 5 non-coherent soils.
