Original Abstract

Decin, the biggest city on the Czech side of the Elbe river, used to discharge its sewage straight into the river without any treatment. Now a municipal wastewater treatment plant will be built for the city's ninety thousands inhabitants. The Decin municipality had already decided to build a wastewater treatment plant underground. One proposal was a surface plam on the other side of the river, buí the long inflow sewer, difficult ground conditions and approach to the site made this alternative less attractive. After years of discussion and fears that an underground treatment works would be too costly, the municipality accepted the proposal for the project and work started.
