Original Abstract

At present, the assessment of dam safety during floods in the Czech Republic is focuses mainly on the passage of the "check flood" through the dam profile. A deterministic comparison of the maximum water level during the check flood and the so called "threshold water level" is carried out during the assessment. The residual dam failure risk due to other causes of failure, such as internalerosion, sabotage, terrorist attack or human error, is assumed to be only marginal. Reliability assessment completed via dam risk analysis is a contemporary challenging technique promising more adequate safety assessment. The paper describes the present state of dam safety evalution in the Czech Republic and seggests possible approarches for future research in this area.
