Original Abstract

The bridge connects a newly developed area (Spielberk Office Centre) with an old city center. It is situated in the vicinity of a new international hotel and a prestige office area. Close to the bridge an old multi span arch bridge with piers in the river is situated. It was evident that a new bridge should also be formed by an arch structure, however, with a bold span without piers in the river bed. Due to poor geotechnical conditions a traditional arch structure that requires resisting of a large horizontal force would be too expensive. Therefore a self anchored stress ribbon & arch structure has been accepted. Smooth curves that are characteristic for stress ribbon structures allowed a soft connection of the bridge deck with both banks.
