Original Abstract

Fe-Zn Intermetallic coatings were prepared. ULC steel (20 ppm C) was used as the substrate. Coating were prepared in the laboratory simulator Rhesca at well defined conditions: dipping time, duration and temperature of annealing. Metallography micrographs of the coating were obtained and the phase composition was observed. The top layer formed by pure zinc was then removed by etching, coatings were moved onto an acrylate mounting resin and such samples were thinned to aprox. 100 um. Transmission Mössbauer spectra with high signal-to-noise ratio were measured. Spectra were fitted using the least square method. The effect of galvanneling conditions on isomer shift, quadrupole splitting and relative area of individual sites of iron in the intermetallic phases was evaluated. Based on the observed tendencies, hypothesis about phase transformations during galvanizing were expressed. Results were compared to previous ones obtained by scattering measurements of commercial coatings.
