Original Abstract

The purpose of this article is to assess some unsubstantiated features of models used to analyse concrete ageing, shrinkage and creep according to current national codes. However, such models are still used in everyday practice, despite their possibly flawed basis. Conservatism amongst bridge engineers is perfectly acceptable and there is no reason to abandon well-tried methods and tools. However, there is a need to assimilate technological advancements which have disproven the validity of previously recommended techniques and methods.
