Original Abstract

The Mostiste Dam on the River Oslava is a rockfill dam with a relatively thin inclined impervious core. Abnormal dam core behaviour has been observed since 1996. In that year the reservoir water level was maintained above the spillway crest due to the reconstruction of bottom outlet for more than eight months. This long term hydraulic load of poorly compacted improper sandy material in the core resulted in increased leakages through the dam core during this period and consequent piping of the core and subsidence of the dam crest observed in the end of the year 2004. This text shows the results of analysis concerning the initiation of filtration deformation process during the increased reservoir water level. The simple 1D FEM seepage flow model was used for simulation of the seepage process through the more permeable layer in the dam core. Material characteristics were taken from the geological survey of the core.
