Original Abstract

The problems of determining the load-carrying capacity of fillet welds in steel structures are mentioned in the presented paper. Software products based on the finite element method used in current design practice are concentrated on stress determination in the basic material of rolled steel beams above all. This stress is often calculated on the FEM beam model. The load-carrying capacity of weld joints in which a complicated triaxial state of stress is not solved by these programmes at all or is solved only marginally; therefore, the solution of concrete details always depends on the designer’s experience. An algorithm will be presented which, in accordance with standard prescriptions, links together the advantages of classical theory with possibilities of contemporary computer technology.
