Original Abstract

Several dams in the Check Republic are equipped with stepped chutes. Most of them are around 100-years old. Safety of these dams has been reevaluated according to the new legislature recently. The safety management of 10 000-years flood is demanded now. To comply with this requirement a significant upgrades of their safety structures have to be often proposed and further assessed using hydraulic research. However, this issue is not easy since a strong aeration combined with several flow regimes occur while the water flows along the stepped chute. Therefore, traditional gauges as a point gauge, Pitot tube, or micro-propellers fails. Here the electrical based methods are often involved. This paper summarizes results from the research of flow along an artificial stepped chute where the electrical impedance spectrometry was involved for measurements of the flow properties.
