Original Abstract

Czech Republic was affected by extreme floods at the end of 20th and the beginning of 21st century. As a response to these events and according to the worldwide trend a new law was adopted. The law requires safety management of 10 000-year flood passage. Many dams in Czech rep. (especially those older dams) no longer comply with this requirement. Therefore, significant upgrades of their emergency spillways have to be proposed. Round-shaped weirs are often used for this purpose. They are easy to build which is their main advantage. Round-shaped weirs were used for example at reconstruction and capacity enhancement of emergency spillway on the Bystřička dam or the Šance dam. One of the most important parameters of each spillway is its capacity. The capacity is directly influenced by the weir shape which is represented by discharge coefficient. A 2D standard k-? turbulence model of incompressible open channel flow was used for estimation of discharge coefficient of round-shaped weir. Water levels were traced using the volume of fluid method (VOF). Numerical simulations were performed using commercial software ANSYS-Flotran (finite element method) and ANSYS-Fluent (finite volume method). Discharge coefficients were computed from weir equation. All results from simulations were further compared with results from hydraulic research. Also, a comparison of pressures along the weir surface was made.
