Original Abstract

The Czech Republic ranks among those countries with a lonh-term tradition in hydrotechnical and dam engineering. The first extensive developmentof dams occurred in the middle ages, when thousands of small and middle-sized embankment dams arose on the territory where this country now stands. the second "wavw" of dam construction started at the end of the nineteenth century, when tens of masonry dams were built in a period lasting until the Second World War.
