Original Abstract

Tensile failure of quasi-brittle materials like concrete typically proceeds in such a way, that a zone of inelastic material behaviour arises in the place of structure with strongest stress concentration and starts to develop through the structure. In this fracture process zone the material failure takes place in lots of mechanisms on many levels of material structure. During failure propagation the FPZ is changing the location, shape and size and behind it an apened stress-free crack remains. The size of FPZ is large in comparison to usual dimensions of structural members due to inhomogeneous nature of quasi-brittle materials. Therefore a nonlinear theory covering energy dissipation of fracture mechanisms in FPZ must be employed within structural analysis, design and assessment.
