Original Abstract

Isosorbide (ISD) has been widely investigated for material application since it is a bio-based and enormously promising organic compound containing two hydroxyl vacant groups. The structure’s composition ensures the usage potential in various polyesters, polyurethanes, or polyethers. Additionally, numerous organic approaches such as acylation, nitrification and esterification can modify hydroxyl functional groups. This work is focused on the production of isosorbide from sorbitol via intramolecular dehydration (particularly following the intramolecular nucleophilic substitution mechanism in the presence of an acid catalyst resulting in water formation). The ideal conditions of the synthesis were described regarding the reaction temperatures, catalyst amounts, and purification approaches. Subsequently, isosorbide dimethacrylate (ISDMMA) synthesis was investigated to obtain isosorbide dimethacrylate as a curable bio-based structure. Numerous analytical methods were incorporated for the study, namely UHPLC with ESI-MS, GC-FID (for the reaction kinetics investigations), and 1H NMR, ESI-MS, FTIR, and XRD served as structural characterization methods. Eventually, isosorbide dimethacrylate was used as a crosslinker of methacrylated monoesters of chemically recycled poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). Dynamic-mechanical properties of prepared cured resins were investigated.
