Original Abstract

The automotive industry is going through a fundamental transformation from combustion engines to electric vehicles. It is an existing prior goal to achieve highest efficiency in order to save energy and allow for extended range. In addition, there is a trend to- wards higher battery voltage (800V or even higher) as enabler for fast charging and for higher driving per- formance. Future cars will also offer increasing com- fort and safety, provided by improved electronic func- tions and a higher degree of automation. The ulti- mate goal of self-driving cars will only gain acceptance when high safety standards even in emergency situ- ations, can be achieved. Therefore, the electronic sys- tems and propulsion need to be reliable for public ac- ceptance. In the publicly-funded project AutoDrive, we developed a prototype of a fail-operational drivetrain consisting of 6-phase electric motor and SiC-based inverter. A software, running separately on different cores, was developed. This software detects failures in the motor and inverter and switches to a fail-operational degraded mode. With this system we succeeded in demonstrating failure detection and mitigation for typ- ical failure modes in electric drives.
