Original Abstract

Magnetic bearing has one big advantage: a non-friction running that makes it very suitable for high-speed applications (70-130 thousands rpm). But this requires the very fast control units, which are able to keep the air gap constant and between desired values. This article wants to show one possible way how to improve the classical PID controller using so-called "fractional calculus"(or non-integer order calculus). This mathematical tool is generalized well-known integro-differential calculus, but with non-integer order. This gives us a wide range of possibilities for tuning the PID controller.
